When I started the CAPSoff campaign a few weeks back, the reactions were... heated. Amazing how many people felt strongly - both ways - about a small bit of plastic. Well, now we're ready for the next step. Linus McCabe, founder of anticAPSLOCK, and myself are launching the Million Dollar Keyboard competition. The goal is simple: to raise a million bucks and give it to the person who designs the best new keyboard layout to replace the old ISO9995 standard. Deadline is 24 December, and we still have $999,758.29 to raise.

I take it you despise the happy hacking keyboard for some reason? Its only flaw is that they put the backspace key one row too low, so that if you're used to typing on a laptop keyboard, switching between that and the HHK is really hard. Also ~` are in the wrong place.
And that's my main complaint with the "replace the keyboard" solution: it doesn't work unless there's a standard for laptop keyboards, and you can replace them too. Which I don't see happening.
I really would like to see an ergonomic keyboard with comet- or dvorak-layout. And different localized versions would be cool, for sure! :)

I admire your reform efforts, but... why don't you simply TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK KEY??!!
All it requires is a simple Windows Registry modification. Instructions are easily available via the results from a simple Google query on the subject. I even found a site listing a short script file to take care of it – dbl-clk on the downloaded script file, reboot, and, whalla!! – no more caps lock key functionality! – ever! (it also includes an additional, separate .vbm file, in case you might like to reverse the mod, later).
Using the self-executing script file (the .vbm file), you don’t even have to open the Registry with an editor (advised against, unless you are familiar with performing Registry modifications; which can render your comp unusable, if not carefully and correctly executed).
I use the anti-caps lock script on all my comps, so no more disrupting caps lock annoyances! You can even mod the registry to replace the caps lock functionality with a shift function, should you so desir; as opposed to disablement.
Check it out folks – much easier than going on some campaign to change the world.

You might want to think of the SHIFT key as well, I use shift instead of caps....
Well... One reason why they SHOULDN'T take the Caps Lock key is that it is used in a number of programs. One program that I use, Blender (a 3D software), uses it to change modes. The caps key is very useful in that software. Idk if other programs use it as well but I do know that 3D animation softwares use it.

I am a Fortran programmer and I hate Caps Lock. The
last time I used cards the punch could use 3 holes for
lowercase. The non-ASCII 5 or 6-bit ALL CAPS
character sets existed in the days of vacuum tubes
and not the late 60s which was by then 7-bit ASCII.
In C you only use caps for constants which are defined
as macros. This is what I use now. I need full ASCII
and meta (for SI symbols, Euro, etc.) to set b7 only
on my keyboard.
Caps are huge problem in alpha numeric codes as
sometimes used by Cobol programmers. The number of
times lusers have muddled 'O' with '0', 'S' with '5',
'I' with '1' and even 'Z' with '2' is too
numerous to count. I would not be surprised
if decision to use caps in such codes has resulted in
business failure. With lowecase most alpha are not
full height, but just don't use 'l' which can be
muddled with '1'.
Caps Lock must be turned by mapping this useless key
to null. The caps lock state must also be cleared.
As for Num Lock it can be justified only if laptops
(another cause of business failure) can be justified.

I respect everyone who wants to reclaim the prime realestate that the capslock key occupies. I suspect I wouldn't mind too terribly much if it was moved or removed completely.
However, I use capslock. *Gasp*. What heresy is this?
I'm a programmer. In programming, it is a common convention to declare constant variables using all capital letters. It's an old convention, but it is not backwards. It continues to this day because it makes code easier to read.
Some may argue that modern IDEs contain features like "autocomplete" which will fill in the constant variable name for you, without the need to type it in -- or at least without the need to type it in capitalized.
Never-the-less, an IDE cannot "auto-complete" a new constant, if you are the author of that constant. Many times, I find myself authoring a new constant variable name with upwards of 20 characters. Instead of performing finger acrobatics with the shift key, I use capslock. At times like these, I don't mind the little guy being easy to reach and press.
Perhaps I'm the minority in this... but it seems that the anti-capslockers are in some cases utterly convinced that capslock is absolutely, positively, 100% a waste of space and time. I do not agree with this absolutism. It may occupy to valuable a spot on the keyboard, but it is not a useless key for me, and, I suspect, others like me.
